Going for A Walk In The Park

by Tenzil Kem 11:30 Wed Apr 22nd, 2009

This is the first in a series of blogs which will be about what I liked and admired in the other anthology winners (in case anyone cares, and frankly even if you don't). First up is our double winner BigRed01.

What I really enjoyed about A Walk In The Park was all the history and interesting facts presented about both countries, Canada and Janpan, and how natural it all felt. Not once did the story feel strained or unnatural. Instead, I could well imagine myself as a silent companion, standing nearby and listening in on this conversation between two friends.

Because of all the great history and information presented this would never be a boring story visually, even though it is only two men talking as they walk around a lovely park setting. Holden cleverly uses flashbacks and cuts away to historical moments to help bring us right into the middle of the action.

My only complaint is the panel count. With so many panels per page, I hope the artists assigned to the book can do it justice. But on that score I am sure Morgan selected a great art team (judging by the panel we have seen already in his blogs). I am really looking forward to seeing A Walk In The Park come to life!

Great post Tenzil, looking forward to the rest in the series ;) As to 'Walk' and it's panel count---they've been reduced, compressed and omitted in several cases. Where we've landed, I think, is with a stronger story. The artist is Diego, whose work will be familiar to many in the community, so, it's in really good hands :) M

WOW... :) Thank you so much TK. What an incredibly kind, generous, cool thing to say. I've been totally blessed with two amazing collaborators for this project. Morgan has completely tightened the script and reduced the panel count. Everything is flowing so much more smoothly now. In addition to that, I'm convinced that Diego actually has the capacity to tap directly into my brain and read my thoughts. The guy is beyond phenomenal. Such an incredibly gifted artist. I'm constantly blown away by his otherworldly talent. It's such an honor to be part of this Manga Memoirs project... So many great stories... So many talented people. So stoked! Thanks again man... :)

Wow, that's so kind of you Holden, considering that I'm not even able to hold a pencil :P No, really, the fact that you are enjoying the artwork so much makes this even more enjoyable... so thanks again, and hope the rest of the guys likes the book as much as you.

It is great to know this story is safe in such capable hands. Twice as much work for you, though, Holden, having to work with two art teams! Good thing "the Boss" is here to keep us all on the straight and narrow!

I think you're all awsome and can't wait to see the flashback panels (if Morgan didn't leave them on the cutting room floor).

hahah...nono, those are integral to the story functioning ;) Without those scenes it's reason for being would be taken away!
