emotions are a flowin'

Like Crackwalker, this is memoir business is a bizarre emotional trip. I'm looking through photo albums, reading old diary entries (my favourite so far, written in crayon in elementary school, was: 'Star Trek was good today'). My daughter was talking about her friend that has a pet snake, and I was able to show her a pic of me with my roommate's baby boa constrictor looped around my straw hat. Lots of laughs, terrible outfits and ridiculous hair styles. But yeah, sad stuff, too. People I don't see anymore; places I've never been back to.

I had dinner with my friend Sack last week, and he was amazed at the stuff I remembered, and that he had forgotten until he read the script. We agreed that neither of us had any idea what each other's dad did for work, nor do we even remember meeting them.

With Rip Current, I was giddy all the time during the production process. This time around, as has happened already, I'm giddy and then near tears, all at the same time.

What a long, strange trip it's been, to quote Gerry Garcia. I know exactly what you mean, Carmen. It's strange what you recall, what you have forgotten, and what things come back to you in the most bizarre ways at the most bizarre times and for the most bizarre reasons. I find it often works best to come at things from a different angle. Instead of trying to think of my cousin Peter and the things we did when we got together I start thinking about street hockey or riding bikes or dislocated wrists (his, not mine) or many other things and see what comes flooding back in. Powerful stuff! I'm looking forward to seeing your story come to life!

These bizarre emotional trips have led to some great stories, so all in all I'd say it's worth it. I think most readers will be at times giddy and at times in tears while reading the anthology. And the experience of reading the book will then become part of their memories! So when are you going to post the pics of you with the terrible outfits and ridiculous hairstyles? ;-)

@ genrewriter: Even if she doesn't post the pics we only need to wait for the anthology to come out!

ha! ha! I didn't even include those really bad pics in the vision document, so no chance you'll ever see those, not even in the anthology!

Oh well, maybe I'll dig out my old pictures (meaning, ask my Mom for them) and then we can laugh at each other's pics over coffee someday...

I was quite sad looking through my photos. I was young and thought I would never forget the names of people I spent time with, but alas, here I am 15 years later and there are a few nameless faces in my album. I still have the fun memories and pics to prove it though ;)
