a couple of updates

by sebzilla 16:32 Wed Mar 11th, 2009

Hey gang, Based on feedback from some users on here, I've applied two fixes to the content tools: In the Pitch Doctor, your overally pitch rating in the top left corner will no longer show "undefined" as the rating. In the Gallery Viewer, the gallery owner's avatar and name will show up properly in the left-hand column Thanks to everyone who has been submitting reports. We're categorizing them and getting to them as quickly as we can! Seb

Ok I think the blog newline and tag stripping is up next on the list. I had that post all nicely formatted. :-(

Hey, Seb! I'm not sure if this is the right place to mention it, but there is something squirrelly going on in the scoring system. I just checked out Dylan's excellent story and gave him, like, one Fanboy and a whole bunch of Hero's, yet when I checked the standings is score actually went down! Also, is there a way on this site to find people so you can leave messages for them and stuff? So far the only way I have been able to do it is by clicking on their names. But what happens if you can't find their names?

I don't think you should rack your head thinking too much about the scoring system. It's good for letting writers know about a specific page/contribution but as a whole, it's a flawed system for measuring the idea of 'winning'. Simple math says, whenever you give less than a full 5 stars, the score will go down. It only goes up if you add full 5 stars. Examples: (5+5/2 = 5) and (5+5+4/3 = 4.67) and (5+5+4+4/4 = 4.5). Additionally if people kept adding pages to be scored in the first place, they could just keep getting more marks. I don't know if the backend has something that only counts the latest version or does some crazy math, but I'd just assume that in the end, they'd read every entry and decide with the scoring in advisement. Zeroes 2 Heroes, I don't know the story there.

Final, I totally agree that it is not too significant, but Sebzilla did ask for us to identify problems. I know what you are saying about the math of the scores. The problem is, on Crackwalker's story his score was around 4.3 or something when I started, then I gave him about 10 scores of 5 and one score of 4. The result was his score went down to 4.0. No way do I see that adding up no matter how I do the math!

Hmm it could be that those 5s are averaging on different spots like page versions and then those averages are being averaged again somehow, or maybe it's just not working like you said.

It's not working. But, like you said, the scores don't really mean anything anyway. I'm sure the stories selected won't be based on those scores, even if the rating system was working perfectly!

You're right Tenzil, something was up. When I fixed the display of the ratings I broke something else. I've re-un-broken the ratings again now.

I think the word you were looking for is un-re-broken! Thanks!
