I read some pitches tonight - both very, very good. I will however apologize right off the back, I know nothing of MANGA save what I have seen on TV (RoboTech, DigiMon, Transforms Energon - yeah that was MANGA was it not? You could see the influences, YUGI Oh)? So - every time I read one of these great stories I am waiting for someone with blue or orange hair to jump in and go "SUPER TIGER KICK WITH EARTH CRYSTAL POWER!". Oh wait, I saw the Batman MANGA a few months ago on the Cartoon Network... that was pretty good... but still... I'm still waiting for someone to jump in and... you know... see above. I know, I'm an idiot. Good luck to all, I read 2 pitches tonight and thought they were both amazing. I plan to read more, but again I apologize if at some moment I crack and leave a comment that alludes to the above.

Yeah. As final said, manga is the written form and anime is the television form. However, what you are experiencing is a bit different. Similar to all written mediums, there is a wide variety of different kinds of manga; everything from the "SUPER TIGER KICK WITH EARTH CRYSTAL POWER" to super emotional, relationship-based storylines to ultra-realistic to kid's shows like doraemon. Unfortunately, most of the manga (and anime) that were brought to North America in the 90s were more of the fantastical and less of those other kinds since the action packed ones were considered more likely to be successful. Thus you ended up with stuff like Dragonball Z, Robotech, Battleship Yamato and Sailor Moon coming across early. Even now, there isn't a wide variety of anime that is shown on network tv. It is mostly, as you mentioned, what is considered "boy's" comics; ones focused on battling, duels or other such stuff. However, if you go to the bookstore or a movie rental shop, there are far more options. One story that recently caught my eye was a manga called Solanin, which is about a group of recent college graduates trying to figure out what they are going to do with their lives. So yeah, if you are interested in learning more, I would recommend going and checking out some of the options available, but if your interests run toward the action & fantastical, you know what you like already :)

I would not call manga a "boys" genre. Infact it is becuase of girls that it has become so popular. There are also tons of manga written by girls for girls, often with very heavy homosexual overtones and purely emotional stories.

Manga are like comics/graphic novels. What you've seen on TV is Anime. Hope that helps
